The power of a good story is hard to deny. Since the beginning of time, people have been telling stories to teach, inspire, and entertain. In fact, the Torah (the first five books of the Bible) was passed along generation by generation my word of mouth until Moses wrote them down. The path of the story has traveled from oral tradition, to scrolls, revolutionized by the printing press, and finally to modern novels. Making those stories come alive has taken a similar route from cave drawings, to plays, to the modern movie.

What makes a story so enthralling? Is it the entertainment value? Or could it be attractive actors and actresses playing their roles? What about an amazing script? Although these can be important elements in a story, there’s one element that’s sure to make a movie a blockbuster. Producers look for this theme in scripts, successful writers use it in their stories, and people flock to see this theme in movies such as “Avatar”, “Spiderman”, and the “Dark Knight”. The holy grail of themes is redemption. A lot of people identify with an imperfect character that struggles from the bottom and rises to the top. They see themselves as the superhero or the everyday person fighting for the right thing.

This blog explores redemptive themes found in many movies from past and present. So join the discussion as a new film review is posted every Monday! There will also be posts on Wednesdays, so check back then as well to enter fun contests and get more involved with Reeldemption.
